For a large segment of NFL fans – and even some who aren’t avid followers of the sport – fantasy football is a way of life.

But social media and the ability to directly interact with players (or those that run their accounts) means many of those fantasy players take to Twitter or Instagram to accost players for not putting up enough points for their liking or for getting hurt and “ruining” their season, as if the $50 they put up to play in a league with 11 buddies is more important than a man’s health and career.

Third-year Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson was the top player taken in many fantasy drafts after racking up 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns, both league highs, in 2016. But during the Cardinals’ season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions, Johnson suffered a dislocated wrist; he underwent surgery a few days ago and will be out for eight weeks or longer.

The Cardinals aren’t the only team lamenting the loss of RB David Johnson.
(AP)

On Wednesday, Johnson chatted with reporters for the first time since his injury, and apparently was asked if he’s thinking about those who have him on their fantasy teams.

No, no, that’s the last thing,” Johnson said. “Fantasy is the last thing on my mind right now.”

Scrolling through tweets that mention Johnson – @DavidJohnson31 – there are many that are supportive, wishing him well and offering prayers as he begins his rehab. But there are numerous others from “fans” telling Johnson “thanks for costin me my season” or telling him “you look like you’re ready to play next week. Please do so.”

And after his comments on Wednesday, there were those who criticized Johnson for (rightfully) saying he’s not concerned with fantasy football.

Johnson isn’t the only NFL player who doesn’t really care how his health or bad day impact your fantasy team.

Last Saturday, as it was still unknown whether the Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. would make his regular-season debut after suffering an ankle sprain in the preseason, the receiver tweeted, “No offense. I could care less about ur fantasy team. This is my Real Life. Focusing on gettin healthy and gettin better. 1 day at a time.”

No offense. I could care less about ur fantasy teams. This is my Real Life. Focusing on gettin healthy and gettin better. 1 day at a time.

— Odell Beckham Jr (@OBJ_3) September 16, 2017

As noted by a couple of respondents to Beckham’s post, “No offense” describes the Giants through two weeks, even with Beckham, who played on Monday night against Detroit.

[Watch on Yahoo: Ravens vs. Jaguars live from London Sept. 24]

One of Beckham’s teammates, Brandon Marshall, has been a disappointment in his first two games with the Giants, with two catches on nine targets. Many fantasy players who thought they were tweeting trash talk to Marshall the receiver ended up tweeting to Brandon Marshall the Broncos linebacker, and Marshall the linebacker had some fun giving it right back to them.

And of course, Marshall the receiver has gotten his share of missives sent to the proper person.

It’s undeniable that fantasy football has helped the NFL, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that they are men who have good and bad days, and can suffer career-impacting injuries. If you want to gamble on those ups and downs, well, that’s why it’s called a gamble.

Just what the NFL needs when people are complaining about a lack of scoring: A Thursday night game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

The last time the Rams played at the 49ers in a prime-time game, they were shut out. This season, the 49ers have played two games and haven’t scored a touchdown. And this is after last week’s “Thursday Night Football” produced one touchdown for both teams.

Scoring is down in the NFL. That’s the latest crisis, after we moved on from Ezekiel Elliott not hustling and gave the television ratings stories a break for a day or so. According to Michael Salfino, through two weeks teams are averaging 1.93 offensive touchdowns per game. That number was 2.4 last season, and 2.36 from 2014 to 2016. Scoring as a whole is down too of course, at 20.1 points per team each game, a number that was 22.6 last season.

[Watch on Yahoo: Ravens vs. Jaguars live from London Sept. 24]

After two weeks, which is not exactly a significant sample, we saw headlines such as “How Football Stopped Being Fun,” “Fantasy Scoring is Down and Will Likely Stay That Way,” “Why Scoring Has Nosedived in the NFL” and “The NFL Has A Scoring Problem – Potentially The Worst In Decades.” Two weeks.

Like the television ratings story, everyone has a theory on why scoring is down. Let’s take a look at the possible culprits:

Practice time has been cut too much: Two-a-day practices were a relic from a time when players had offseason jobs and needed to get in shape during July and August. It was probably long overdue for the union and NFL to cut back on padded contact practices, especially with so many stories about player health. Of course, less practice time has consequences. Offenses seem behind early in the season (why don’t we ever recognize that, perhaps, defenses have been really good so far?). Coaches will complain that the game is worse because of the cutbacks in practice but they’re not an unbiased source; coaches love nothing more than practice and even more practice. The one are this seems to have really had an effect is …

Offensive line play is down: “The team would be better but its offensive line is just terrible.” Who is that about? The New York Giants? Seattle Seahawks? Cincinnati Bengals? Houston Texans? Could be a number of teams. Poor offensive line play has been a few years coming (NFL Films’ Greg Cosell broke down the problems scouting offensive linemen last year, which you can read here). Because it seems everyone is running a spread offense in college, offensive linemen aren’t prepared for the NFL game. Then they don’t get enough practice time to develop. Therefore, there are fewer offensive linemen to go around (this could just also be a coincidental temporary downturn in the number of capable and athletic 310-pound males from 22-32 years old). Whatever the reason, offensive linemen are in short supply and there are way too many teams who can’t function on offense because they can’t block – again though, let’s give some credit to defensive schemes. This isn’t college football, where most teams are awful on defense and even Iowa-Iowa State was tied 38-38 at the end of regulation. Newsflash: Defenses are good in the NFL. The same people complaining about lack of scoring might have been upset that all the NFL’s rules are designed to make it tougher on defenses. It’s 2017, and people like to be unhappy about something or anything.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) is sacked by Detroit Lions' Jarrad Davis (40). (AP)New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) is sacked by Detroit Lions’ Jarrad Davis (40). (AP)

The short passing game has taken over: Kevin Clark of The Ringer wrote a great piece examining how the short-passing game is the go-to offense for just about every team, and that makes the game less aesthetically pleasing. The NFL has always been extremely risk averse – it will be nice to reach a point in which a team makes the obvious call to go for it on fourth-and-1 and it isn’t treated like they’re taking A Big Gamble – and that has affected how offenses are devised. Even guys like Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions and Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens, who have the ability to throw it deep, have been turned into short, safe passers.

I believe some of this is due to the New England Patriots’ success. They have a highly efficient offense around a short passing game. It’s a copycat league. Tom Brady is never going to post a great yards per attempt because the Patriots play a certain way. Now everyone seems to be playing that way, even if they have quarterbacks who can do more than dink and dunk. The short-passing trend probably goes all the way back to Bill Walsh and the West Coast Offense with the San Francisco 49ers, but it’s more pronounced now. The shift in offensive strategy is also probably due to the idea that interceptions are a death knell. We all play a part in that, with constant criticism for any quarterback turnover. We can’t complain about Stafford throwing too many interceptions, then congratulate him when he plays a safer game and cuts down mistakes (his current 6.7 yards per attempt would be his lowest over a full season since his rookie season) and also beat the NFL up because everyone is playing it safe. Also, to repeat: Defenses are good. As we’ve seen, offensive linemen can’t block some of the great pass rushers in the game too long, so the counter is to get the ball out fast. And defensive coordinators aren’t going to allow deep shots. Maybe we’re so used to seeing receivers on Saturdays running free in secondaries play after play after play – I get why fans like a lot of points, but it’s probably worth noting that a big part of the “fun” in college football is also due to utterly disinterested defensive play – that we forget it’s not that easy in the NFL.

Quarterback play is bad: My guess is that if I searched archives of NFL coverage in 1933, there would be someone saying that quarterback play has never been worse, because the Portsmouth Spartans, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cardinals can’t develop anyone. Angst about quarterback play around the league is a story as old as the NFL itself, it seems. Yes, some teams are terrible at quarterback. It would be better for guys like Russell Wilson, Andy Dalton and Eli Manning if their lines could block. It would be better if stars Andrew Luck and Cam Newton (who is playing but off to a slow start) hadn’t had shoulder surgeries, something they can’t really control. Still, we’re in an era in which guys like Aaron Rodgers, Wilson, Dak Prescott, Carson Wentz, Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Newton, Stafford, Matt Ryan and Kirk Cousins are still in their primes and youngsters like Mitch Trubisky, Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer have shown promise. And next year’s draft class at quarterback is deep and exciting. Playing quarterback is the most impossible job in sports – again, NFL defenses are good – and there are a lot of young guys doing it at an impressive level. When the old guard moves on and goes to the Hall of Fame, the league will be fine. And people will still tell us how bad quarterback play is.

Scoring is down in the NFL. There are real reasons for that. You can watch offensive line play any Sunday and recognize that’s an issue. You can watch many games on Saturdays and not see a colleg team running a pro-style offense, which means fewer players are coming to the NFL ready to play (this isn’t college football’s fault, by the way, their only obligation is to win games and spread offenses accomplish that). There are probably too many NFL players on rookie deals playing key roles because they’re cheap and the NFL’s salary structure from the latest CBA unwittingly drove a lot of veterans out of the game. Thursday night games, with offenses working with stripped-down game plans on a short week, have been bad for the NFL’s product.

A lack of scoring is the NFL’s latest five-alarm fire. And it’s probably not going to get better with the Rams and 49ers on Thursday night. But if there are a bunch of points this week, next week we’ll read all about how terrible defensive play in the NFL has gotten.

Previously on Lucha Underground: Rey Mysterio Jr. — one of the most legendary, accomplished and popular pro wrestlers in modern history — got beaten up and eaten (?) by a God-infested, cage-bound Ninja Turtle in a janitor jumpsuit.

If you need to catch up on the rest of the episodes — if you aren’t caught up, you should need to catch up — you can read about season 1 here, and season 2 here. Season 3 episode recaps can be found here.

Remember that With Spandex is on Twitter, so follow it. Follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. You can also follow Brandon on Twitter.

Hit those share buttons! Make sure to spread the column around so people can share in our love of all things Lucha, and encourage folks to finally bite the bullet and watch the first two seasons on Netflix. It’s on Netflix. It’s the best Netflix show about a used car salesman manipulating a Mexican cowboy into serving him!

And now, the Over/Under on Lucha Underground season 3, episode 36, originally aired on September 20, 2017.

Under: The One Complaint I Have About Every Episode In The Second Half Of Season 3

El Rey Network

Sing along if you know the words: ♫ the match was going fine until the distraction finish ♫

I don’t know which Lucha Underground writer got super into Raw during the break and decided to work it onto the show like indie wrestlers work in moves they saw in New Japan GIFs, but I hope they don’t work there in season 4. I hope there is a season 4, which there definitely will or will not be depending on who you ask, and that this isn’t the final regular episode of the run.

Anyway, yeah, Famous B is made ring announcer for the night because Melissa Santos has a match, so he interferes in Texano vs. Dante Fox and throws it Fox’s way by prematurely announcing Texano’s victory. It’s the Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker SummerSlam 2015 finish, with an injured black Porter Wagoner in place of a ring bell. Texano gets distracted, so Dante Fox uses the Divas Roll-up Of Doom and scores the three.

After the match, Dario Cueto saves B from a beatdown by putting Texano in a match with him in hour one of Ultima Lucha Tres, with the stipulation that if B can somehow pull out a victory, Texano’s Lucha Underground contract transfers to him. So if you have a manager, you aren’t under contract to Lucha Underground? Has Mil Muertes not worked here all this time? How does Lucha Underground even HAVE contracts, come to think of it? I know Konnan’s responsible for signing the dragon and the pissed-off ninja skeleton and the immortal guy and probably the time traveler, but how you sign a guy who’s already died twice?

Over: History’s Most Dramatic Kiss

El Rey Network

As for Melissa, she opens the episode learning how to wrestle by training with Fenix in what appears to be the warehouse where J.J. Abrams keeps all his lens flares. This segment features three things I really enjoyed:

1. Fenix will not take off his mask, even when he’s alone with his girlfriend, not even for a second. Melissa Santos and Fenix are dating (on the show) to the point that he’s driving her to work in his Firebird, but she’s never seen him without his mask on. They’re in here Daredevil and Elektra fight-flirting with kung fu noises and he won’t take off his mask, even when she asks him to. I’m not a beautiful woman, but I feel like getting into a Phantom of the Opera situation where the dude you love won’t let you see his face is a dealbreaker.

2. The most unintentionally hilarious thing Lucha Underground’s ever done, which is Fenix’s gentle touch of Melissa’s shoulders causing a DISTANT EAGLE SCREECH. I’m surprised you couldn’t hear my Edna Krabappel laugh at the fucking lovebird touch on El Rey Network.

3. The most dramatic kiss ever filmed, featuring like thirty lens flares and SEVEN CUTS.

El Rey Network

That’s the Liam Neeson jumping a fence of kisses.

Over: Darren Aronofsky’s Moth!

El Rey Network

The actual Melissa Santos and Fenix vs. Marty the Moth Martinez and Mariposa The Other Moth Additional Martinez is better than you’d expect. It’s basically the tag team equivalent of Kota Ibushi vs. YOSHIHIKO — or, for WWE fans, AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon — where Fenix is at some points literally physically guiding her through the motions himself, but it works for the story. Fenix is so much better than Marty that he can like, tag with a mannequin and still almost beat him.

That’s not a knock on Melissa, though. She plays her role as well as she could, and shows some pretty great in-ring showmanship at times. The way she’s maneuvering in the wheelbarrow before Fenix slams her elbow-first down onto Marty has a natural charisma Mariposa can’t seem to muster, and she’s been wrestling since the ’90s. Still, the match is more about the story than the match, and Melissa getting fridged to give Marty vs. Fenix at Ultima Lucha Tres more heat.

Note:

El Rey Network

I guess they have to have brother/sister incest on EVERY cable show about dragons.

Over: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

El Rey Network

We have the Gift of the Gods match a little early. To recap, that’s Paul London vs. Saltador vs. Mala Suerte vs. Drago vs. Cortez Castro vs. Pentagon Dark vs. Son of Havoc. As much as I like most of those guys, the only two people who could POSSIBLY win that match are Pentagon Dark and Son of Havoc. So what do they do? They have them both win the match, simultaneously, due to what I can only assume is a stroke from referee Marty Elias, who thinks counting a double pin and then confusing everyone is how wrestling matches work.

That sets up those two having a match to determine who actually won, and it’s going to be …

El Rey Network

It’s a good decision, though, because it gives us a sudden but PERFECT match for Ultima Lucha Tres: the most over rudo on the show, Pentagon Dark, versus the most over tecnico on the show, Son of Havoc. With stakes and a memorable stipulation. And with four episodes of “pay-per-view” and no certain future, you’ve got to imagine that the Gift of the Gods doesn’t stay around a waist very long. That should steal the show.

PAY OFF THIS LIMO THING

El Rey Network

This week’s final scene is Dario Cueto taking his gifted and then stolen-back magical God-spewing gauntlet of power into the evil limousine of upper management where the shadowy, cigar-smoking Big Bad of the show and Evil Godfrey — Satanfrey? — await. Dario’s upset about the gauntlet not taking over Cage faster, and he drops the info that maybe Cage is actually a machine and not a human being and that’s why it wasn’t working. Now that they’ve said that they can’t actually do it, but oh man, how great of a reveal would that be? “I WAS BEING LITERALLLLL.!”

The match (as we guessed, because duh) is Cage vs. Jeremiah Crane vs. Mil Muertes for possession of the gauntlet. If Cage wins, he gets the gauntlet back and their evil plan which we’re still not sure of fails. Oh, and the Big Bad has been invited to the Temple for Ultima Lucha to destroy Cage himself. I hope it’s the kitty cat guy from last year who disappeared!

And that’s the show.

At Ultima Lucha Tres

El Rey Network

The card:

  • Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Matanza Cueto inside a steel cage
  • Ivelisse returning and getting that match with Catrina they haven’t mentioned in a long-ass time
  • Mask vs. Hair, Fenix vs. Marty Martinez
  • Taya vs. Sexy Star, Last Luchadora Standing (without being put into an armbar)
  • Famous B vs. Texano for Texano’s services, a la Marlena I hope
  • A HELL OF WAR match, aka Three Stage of Hell, between Dante Fox and Killshot
  • Literally A Gauntlet match: Cage vs. Mil Muertes vs. Jeremiah Crane
  • LADDER MATCHHHHHH
  • Johnny “Impact” Mundo vs. Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship

Should be a great show. A great four shows. And I don’t care about the problems and the bullshit, don’t let them be the last.

Former NFL running back Ricky Williams is a University of Texas legend, but that didn’t prevent him from spending a night in jail this week.

The now-40-year-old Williams was pulled over in Austin for a traffic offense Tuesday night, reportedly because his car did not have a rear license plate. During the stop, the police officer saw that Williams had two outstanding traffic warrants, so he was brought to jail.

Former NFL RB Ricky Williams, who played for the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins among other teams, addresses an audience during a conference on medical marijuana at Harvard Medical School, Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Boston. (AP)

Williams spent the night in jail (he was smiling in his mug shot), paid a fine and was released on Wednesday afternoon.

A Heisman Trophy winner at Texas and the No. 5 pick in 1999 who had one of the more headline-grabbing careers in recent NFL memory, Williams now works for ESPN’s Longhorn Network as an analyst.

[Watch on Yahoo: Ravens vs. Jaguars live from London Sept. 24]

If Williams was bothered by the incident, you can’t tell from his Twitter feed. On Thursday, he posted “morning thoughts,” a quote that read, “Sometimes life is about risking everything for a dream no one can see but you.”
